Comment on Curate is refusing to back down from page 3
MORE than 650 people turned out to St Nicholas Church, Sevenoaks on Sunday to support their leaders.
Reverends MacLeay and Oden were delivering part two of their controversial sermons into the role of men and women today.
tag heuer replica Our front page story last week examined a sermon by Rev Oden in which he said: 'Wives - submit to your own husbands.'
Sevenoaks has been buzzing since our paper came out, with chatter about this issue.
As expected, many of the flock have written to us, backing their teachings on 'submissive' women.
Plenty of readers have been outraged.
The national newspapers all followed our lead, with notable stories in the Times, Daily Telegraph, Daily Mail and the Sun.
Indeed, a pew or two was taken up by reporters at one of the Sunday services.
Gevril Watches What is clear is the issue needs to be discussed publicly, even if the church's views are deemed to be out of step with modern thinking, as Rev MacLeay told us last week.
Rev MacLeay writes on this week's letters page (p18) to explain his opinions in his own words and to clear up his role in the publication of a leaflet the Role of Women In the Local Church.
We are happy to give him the forum.
But some of the less-enlightened members of his flock have taken the opportunity to bash the Chronicle and question the veracity of our story.
Our letters page hopefully reflects the kaleidoscope of views in the town.
We will always strive to give our readers their voice through our columns, particularly on a controversial issue, even if it may be critical of our coverage.
Thus, we have devoted the whole letters page to this one issue.
The debate goes on.
At Sunday's service, Rev Oden discussed the role of the men today (see Sevenoaks Chronicle p3).
And at St Mary's, Sundridge this Sunday, the topic will be 'St Paul's view of women'.
As the Rev Dr David Attwood wrote on his February 14 order of service: "St Paul gets a very bad press on this topic and he is sometimes badly misquoted.
"While he clearly thought we should respect each other, and particularly wives and Fake Paris Hilton Watches their husbands, he actually never told wives to obey their husbands."
The debate continues...
